The Literary Fest UTKARSHA 2012 was held in the college on 7th and 8th? September 2012. All the departments of both Junior and Degree College participated? in this two day event wholeheartedly with full enthusiasm. Various activities right from quiz , presentations ,exhibitions, seminars? to? software development and Gaming ?were organized? in order to bring out the hidden talents and various skills of the students. Both inter and intra collegiate events were organized which helped them enhancing leadership and managerial skills. Some events were individual events while some others were group events. |

ARTS CIRCLE (Degree College) |
The Arts Circle organized the singing competition - A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDS. Students were given the names of three legendary artists - Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna and Jagjit Singh. There were 12 participants who performed live and it was a nice musical performance. |

ARTS CIRCLE (Junior College) |
This year, under UTKARSHA, various events were conducted by Arts Circle viz., NAIL ART, POT PAINTING, T-SHIRT PAINTING, BEST-OUT-OF-WASTE, on the 7th Sept 2012 and RANGOLI, COLLAGE, TATTOO-MAKING, MEHENDI, on the 8th Sept 2012 by the Arts Circle, which had an overwhelming response from the students? community. It was ?highly appreciated and ran successfully. |
Nail Art : This means Decoration of nails with different colours and designs. The best decorated nail was selected on the basis of creativity, neatness, colour combination, design/pattern.? There were 16 participants. |
Pot Painting : Painting of pots with presentation, design and colours. Best decorated Pots were selected on the basis of colour scheme, presentation, design, neatness. There were 24 participants. |
T-Shirt Painting : Painting on T-Shirts. The best painted T-Shirt was selected with the social message along with creativity, colour scheme and neatness. There were 21 participants. |
Best-out-of-waste: ?Useful or creative product made out of waste materials. The best product was selected on the utility value, product made with creativity. No. of Participants? were 6. |
Rangoli :? This was a group event. Participants had to use only rangoli powders to put rangoli. The best Rangoli was selected on the basis of creativity, neatness, colour combination, design/pattern. As many as 30 participants took part in this. |
Collage : This was again a group event where creativity in the form of combination of products with proper execution, theme and presentation and the best decorated collage was selected on the above factors. Participant number was 21. |
Tattoo-Making : Tattoo on human body is a fashion now-a-days. Participants had to put the tattoo only on arms with the help of Tattoo Pens. There were 11 participants and the tattoo selection was based on the creativity, neatness, colour combination etc., |
Mehendi : Mehendi is an event wherein students had to draw ?various designs on one?s palm and forearm with henna mixture. There was a huge participation of nearly 40 students. Everyone enjoyed. |

DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY - ?Operon

The department organized 6 inter collegiate events and one intra collegiate event. Following were the events. |
Biobling : An event where the art & creativity of the participants were checked on the basis of authenticity and creativity. Each team had to collect a chit from the lucky draw which had five different combinations of pulses and vegetables in it. There were no elimination rounds.
Impact Factor: Biobling is a unique event where the creativity and art of the students is unleashed using pulses, vegetables and decorative articles. Students from all biological streams participated in this event with great interest since they get a platform to showcase their creativity and win exciting prizes. |
Labathon: ?A marathon where people don?t swim, cycle or run; but do the lab techniques with double the fun!? This was an event where the skills and knowledge of various lab techniques of participants were checked. The event was conducted in 3 rounds: Elimination round, Semi-final round & Final round.
Impact Factor: Students from all biological streams participate in this event with great interest since they get a platform to showcase their knowledge & skills regarding the lab techniques and also win exciting prizes. |
Biowar Slayer: A series of murders have plagued the reputed Anti-terrorist organization Biowar Slayer Inc. The modus operandi for the murders seems to be the use of venomous snakes. Hence, the theme ?Rise of the Serpents?!
Impact Factor: Biowar Slayer is a doublet of Forensic Investigation & treasure Hunt. It tests the participants both physically & mentally. So you can?t just think, you have to run too! |
Shutterbugs Inc.: It is a photographic event. The participants were given an hour to click pictures. They had to select any 3 of them and interlink them to make a story related to the field of biology, and finally present their storyline.
Impact Factor: Students got exposed to a combination of photographic skills and knowledge of the subject. |
DRAMATECH: It is a bio-skit event in which topics related to life sciences have to be enacted out by the participants in the form of a skit. Use of background music and props were allowed. The judging was on the basis of creativity, presentation, etc.
Impact Factor: The acting abilities and humour of the participants impressed the judges and the audience. All the skits were very well received. They were full of entertainment & the basic concept of each topic was kept in mind very well by all the teams. |
MINDMAP : The elimination round comprised of 2 sub-rounds unlike any other quiz event. The 2nd round was new and innovative (Pictography) and it was loved and enjoyed by the participants. The event on the whole had questions dealing with all branches of biotechnology. Various rounds were set for the participants to tackle and reach the finals. The following were the rounds for this year?s event:
- Who Am I??, Rapid Fire , Buzzer Round, Dumb Charades, Jumping Genes, Guess The Scientist, Bounce The Ball and Analytical Round

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
This was an intra collegiate event with an Elimination Round in which 156 participants played 3 events, out of which the top 50 were selected to play the further rounds. Each of the further rounds had eliminations, and thus, the top 3 participants moved on to play the finale which was a relay. The event was a big success with a huge participation. |

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY - KALPAVRIKSHA

This year Utkarsha 2012 witnessed 2 inter collegiate ?events.
Texture ? O- Mural: The event consisted of 2 competitions, viz., textured painting and Collage making. Participants created paintings and collages by using plant materials like, fruits, seeds, leaves, vegetables, flowers, etc.

Botanica Del Arte: The event consisted of Flower arrangement, Fruit and Vegetable carving and Bio-jewellery. |
Exhibition & sale of Plants & Plant Products : Exhibition cum sale of Plants and Plant Products was arranged. All the exhibits were prepared by the students of Botany from FY, SY and TYBSc classes. Fruity jams (Merry-Pineapple), Sauce (Tomchilly Sauce), Refreshing healthy juices and tea (Squash & Kashmiri Kawa) were prepared and served. |
Impact Factor: Students showed their art of flower arrangement and sharpened their creativity and culinary skills. |

Chem Quiz : An Intercollegiate quiz to test the knowledge of participants in basic science and various branches of Chemistry. |

CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION |
A meaningful appreciation of any subject necessitates a firm background on the many stages in the development of the subject knowledge as it stands today. This background comprises chronology and the historical anecdotes as markers of the logical unfolding of the subject matter. With this view a crossword puzzle (in Chemistry) competition named ?CROSS PEAKS 2012?was organized in two stages. |
The first stage was an Elimination Round wherein 23 students participated. The time duration was 20 minutes. 16 students scored over 50% points in the Elimination Round and were selected for participation in the second and final round. The Final Round was of one hour duration. It was even though more rigorous, enjoyed by all the students. |

Commerce association organized two events in Utkarsha 2012.
Business Quiz : This was an intra college event. The event was planned with Questions related to business, environment and accountancy. There were 39 Participants.
Students attempted a written quiz of 50 questions consisting of questions on business, advertising, environment and a crossword on accounting terminology. |
Catchy copy contest: This ?was also intra collegiate but a group event.? The theme was ?Print advertisement for Baby diapers?. Number of participants was 11 and students were provided chart papers on which they designed an advertisement for the said theme using their creativity and their own materials. |
Impact Factor: Business and accounting, ecology sensitivity and creativity of students were brought out. Students were made to understand what and how of business via various questions. |

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE- Ziegers 12??

Ziegers 12 was organized by Computer Science department as a part of Utkarsha 2012. This year three inter collegiate ?events were held which were well received.

DEBUGGING : This event was to test the debugging capability of the participant without the help of a compiler which tells the candidate?s proficiency in the programming language C++. There were a total of 17 participants from various colleges under Mumbai University. The event which was conducted in 2 levels.
RAPID FIRE QUIZ? PUZZLES: This event too was an inter collegiate event and consisted of Computer Science related Quiz and puzzles. There were a total of 20 participants from various colleges. |
LAN GAMING: FIFA 2009, COUNTER STRIKE and NFS (Need For Speed) MOST WANTED: This event like every year was the star event with a huge turn up from various colleges and the student organizers had to turn down many of the ?online registrations. Professional gaming teams and amateurs participated with full enthusiasm. NFS MOST WANTED had 32 participants. FIFA 2009? had 16? participants. COUNTER STRIKE experienced a huge participation of 80 students with 16 groups of 5 students each. |
Impact Factor: ?Software testing without compiler is not easy. One should really master programming language by building good logic. Mathematical ability and confidence in programming will fetch good pay package in IT Companies. Students got first -hand experience into this. Students learnt managing the continuous in flow of participants especially for the Lan Gaming which enhanced their leadership skills. |

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS |
The Economics department organized 2 events namely Bull Bear Race and ECO ROCKS. Following is the report. |
Bull Bear Race : The theme ?was Mock Stock (understanding functioning of capital market and its ?volatility). This was an inter cum intra collegiate event. There were 24 intercollegiate participants and 78 intracollege participants.

Study of the parameters affecting the capital market like Global recession, Eurozone collapse, growth of BRICS nations, oil prices ,government policies, status of Agriculture, industries and service-sector was researched by the organising team and displayed in the charts. ?A detailed power point presentation was made as background information given to the participants. The audience interaction was done in a creative manner. The notional amount of Rs. One lakh ?was given to the contestants to invest and make a portfolio from the shares of listed companies like ACC, TATA motors, Suzlon Energy, Kerala Ayurveda, Renuka Sugars etc. The Breaking news changed the market scenario. New prices were announced. The speculators were excited or anxious to know the revised value of their portfolios. Winners were those who made the maximum profits. |
ECO ROCKS: The theme was Fundamentals of Economics. This too was inter cum intra collegiate event. 22 intercollegiate and 30 intracollege students participated in this event. |
The participants wrote lyrics based on the basic concepts and ideas of Economics and sang to a variety of tunes. The groups accompanied by instrumental music chose various forms from rap music to bharud and qavvwali to express their concerns over economic issues like inflation, unemployment, poverty, policy paralysis, inequalities, hunger and parallel economy in Marathi, Hindi and English. Photographs of the great Economists with their major contributions along with great singers were depicted in the form of exhibits and the slide show presentation ?very creatively. Innovative ways of learning and reflecting on curricular items with fun made the audience echo spontaneously and repeatedly ECO ROCKS .Oral and written feedback of the participants especially from other colleges was extremely heartening to the organizers. |

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH & THE ENGLISH ASSOCIATION |
The department of English organized 3 Intra collegiate events: ?Creative Writing Competition, ?Western Vocals Competition and? Western Dance Competition. |
Creative Writing Competition: Nearly 40 students both from Junior as well as Degree College participated in the Creative Writing Competition. Topics were given on the spot separately for poetry and fiction. Students were asked to choose one of the topics and write a poem or a story on it. The event provided a good platform for showcasing the talent of the students and giving them an opportunity to express their views. |
Western Vocals Competition: The theme was ?Friendship, War and Peace?. 30 students participated in the Western Vocals Competition. The students were given the theme prior to the competition. Students chose one of the topics and sang with much enthusiasm. |
Western Dance Competition: Students from Junior College participated in large numbers in the Western Dance Competition. There were 6 groups and each of the groups had 4 to 6 dancers. Each group tried to outdo the other group in their own way.? This event was enjoyed by one and all present. |
Impact factor: Students? creativity, concentration, writing, singing, dancing overflowed, a good opportunity availed of. All hidden talents were brought out in the open. |

DEPARTMENT OF? INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Two events were organized as a part of Utkarsha 2012. |
ANDROID SEMINAR: This was an inter collegiate event with a good response from 109 participants. The topic was ANDROID operating system. Seminar consisted of two sessions. It started with the topic ?What is Smart Phone?? and then entered into the elaboration of Android Operating System. Various applications, features and versions of Android were discussed. Seminar included comparison of Android with Apple and iphone which was knowledgeable. Many video clips were presented and this made the concepts more lucid, inquisitive and interesting. The ANDROID SEMINAR was a great success. |
ANDROID QUIZ: This was an inter as well as intra collegiate event with 60 participants. The response was very good.
Impact Factor: Students had an awesome feast of the future world. The videos helped the students to understand quickly.

SILENCE WITH INNOVATIVE MINDS: |
?SILENCE WITH INNOVATIVE MINDS?, a presentation on ?FUTURE TECHNOLOGIES / LIFE WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY? made a remarkable record by having 27 groups participating in the event. The competition went really tough to be judged. The biggest challenge for the participants was that they had to give a presentation that was self explanatory. They were not allowed to speak. The whole event was splendid, & got more participants from various colleges like Somaiya, Model, MCC and SIES College of Commerce & Economics. |
Impact Factor:? Students were able to display their non verbal communication skills and PowerPoint presentation skills to convey how difficult it is to communicate without any technology. |

Marathi Vangmaya Mandal organized two events, Essay Writing and Singing. Both were intra collegiate and students from Junior college as well as Degree College participated. |
In the Nibhand? Spardha(Essay writing competition) 22 students participated. They were asked to choose one? topic from the three given topics , write an essay on it and submit it by 3rd September ?12. The event provided a good platform for showcasing their writing skills and giving them an opportunity to express their views. |
In the Gaayan? Spardha (Singing competition), 20 students participated . The students were given the theme Paus (Rains) prior to the competition. Students sang with great enthusiasm on the given theme. |
Impact factor: The events provided a good platform for showcasing the talents of the students. |

DEPARTMENT OF? MANAGEMENT STUDIES

The BMS department conducted? 3 events, as a part of the literary and fine art festival ?Utkarsha? . |
Management Mastee: Aimed at mixing management with fun, was an Inter Collegiate event. A team of 5 participants was necessary for the event as majority of the events were group tasks. The event saw a registration of 10 groups, the event was conducted in two slots with 5 teams per slot, and the event had 5 rounds. Every round from the ice-breaker till the last round made sure that the participants racked their brains and also had fun. The event also made sure that all the 5 participants in a group gave in their contribution. The participants took up every round as a challenge and gave their best. The teams were eliminated from the 3rd round onwards. On the whole the event made an impact and made sure the participants ?had a nice time. |
Impact Factor: ?Students gained experience to work as a Team. It also ?tested their strategy planning, brand recognition, and convincing power among a few. |
Product Launch: Students recreated the atmosphere of the month old product launch done by the SYBMS students. The best of the previous times stalls were combined and the students tried to convince people to buy their product. The products ranged from food to nail art to accessories. This event that happened in the Quadrangle attracted a lot of students and faculties. Impact: Students flourished their marketing skills. |
Treasure hunt : With a management twist, the game had 6 rounds. Each team had 2 students, it was an Inter Collegiate event. The event had 17 registrations. Each round had different criteria on which the participants were ranked and the least scoring teams were eliminated. The rounds ranged from finding a simple thing, to selling products, from convincing people to doing simple tasks. The event made the ?teams running all over the college finding things and doing tasks. All the 3 events were supported by the Rotaract Club of SIES, and the volunteers were the members of the club. |

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS (JUNIOR) |
The Mathematics department of Junior college conducted Maths Quiz (Level-I & Level-II) during Utkarsha-2012. The idea of?conducting?this quiz was to make students think in different ways. The quiz attracted 30 participants for Level-I and 39 students for Level-II. The questions were based on basic mathematical calculations. All students enjoyed the difficulty level of the questions. |
Impact factor: Oral calculation, Mental calculation( calculation and memory without calculator) , mathematical ability etc. improved. ? ? ? |

Year 2012 being declared as National Mathematics Year by Our Prime Minister, the Mathematics Association(Degree) inaugurated its activities for the year during Utkarsha 2012 with the following two events:- |
Mathematical Treasure Hunt:
This Intra-Collegiate event aimed to offer a creative extended learning experience to students centered on performance, team-work, speed and time management. There were 29 teams in all with a Team size of 3 students per team. |
Impact Factor:- The students thoroughly enjoyed the activity and they spread the excitement around, as a result of which there were spot entries by 14 more teams and the treasure hunt was conducted in two rounds. |
Paper presentation on any one of the following topics:-
a) Life and Works of Srinivas Ramanujan
b) Contribution of India to Mathematics
This was an Intra-Collegiate event with 6 Teams and a? Team size of 2 students. |
Theme and Impact:-Students were given the two topics 2 weeks in advance. The participating teams presented the same using power point which was well received by an interested audience consisting of students from FY,SY and TY classes. The event helped to create interest, excitement and enthusiasm among students and brought out their presentation and communication skills. They learnt how to search for content, structure it appropriately for best impact and deliver it confidently and effectively. |

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY -Microexplore
|
The department of Microbiology conducted a two day event Microexplore under the aegis of UTKARSHA 12, a literary and fine arts festival. Microexplore was aimed at providing edutainment to all the students. Under the umbrella of Microexplore three events were held. |
Exhibition: ?An exhibition showcasing the different aspects of microbiology was held . A total of 35 exhibits were displayed by the students of SY B.Sc microbiology. The exhibits were aimed at explaining the various avenues of Microbiology. The areas covered by the exhibits included ?Bioremediation, Waste water treatment, Oil Spills, Food Microbiology, Virology, Medical Microbiology, Role of Quality Control in pharmaceutical industry, Water microbiology, molecular biology, biowar etc to cite a few. A total of 28 students put up theses exhibits. The exhibition was well received by all the students, especially the Junior College and FY B.Sc students. |
BioTab: ?This was a word game played by the participants. A word related to biology was given to the team of two players, where one of the partners was expected to guess the word based on effective cluing by the other partner. There were three rounds played by a total of 21 teams. This was an intra college event. |
MicroPicasso: This was an intra college event.A total of 40 students participated in this event. Students were given? pigmented microbial cultures and a Nutrient Agar plate. Using the pigmented cultures as their paints, the Nutrient Agar Plates as their canvass and the nichrome loop as their paint brush , the students were required to paint anything based on the theme ? Nature?.? |
Impact Factor: Enhanced the culturing skills of the students coupled with their creativity, non verbal communication and exhibiting skills. |

POLITICS ASSOCIATION

The Politics Association organized an Essay Competition on the following topics: |

Along with the Debating Society, the Politics Association organized?a?Debate on ?Censorship:?A?thing of the past? on 7th?September ?12. Twenty two teams participated in the event. |

DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY |
This year Utkarsha saw a new therapy to distress a person from anxiety of all sorts. This was Dance Movement Therapy organized by Philosophy department. There were 50 participants. |
Students from Junior as well as Degree College participated. Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)refers to the psychotherapeutic use of dance and movement, as a process to further emotional and physical integration of the students. The dance therapist conducted rhythmic dance to ensure complete participation and involvement, in order to free them from any self-inhibitions with regard to dance .Since music by itself has been scientifically proved to have therapeutic effects on one?s physical and emotional well-being, and also because music and dance movement, as always seen complement each other. Music is used as an integral part of DMT. Ms. Rumya Natraj? and her colleague Ms. Sarita Ganesh, conducted activities with the aim to overcome distress, anxiety and enable physical fitness, good feeling etc.. |
Clay Model Making: Mr. Milan Pal, taught in a very interesting and enthusiastic manner forms of birds, animals, human face and such to the students. He step by step taught to make Lord Ganesha, in various styles and forms. On the whole the students and the staff enjoyed thoroughly and carried home their clay creations. There were 50 participants. |
Both the events were like workshops and everyone had something to take back home. |
Impact factor :? Destressing with fun was the motto of dance therapy. Clay Model making helped students to bring out their creativity. |

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS |
Under the umbrella of Utkarsha-2012, Physics department organized the following two events.

Poster and Portrait Presentation: This was an Inter-Collegiate event with the theme ?Modern discoveries in Physics / Nobel Laureates in Physics? for poster and? ?Portrait of a Physicist that you greatly admire? for portrait presentations. There were 3 participants. The participants were graded on the basis of clarity of presentation, poster design and content of their presentation.

Physics Quiz: This was an intra-College event. The event had 19 registered teams with a team size of 2 participants. The first round was an elimination round. This was conducted in the form of a written test consisting of 20 questions to be answered in 15 minutes. On the basis of merit, four teams were selected for the second and the final round. The Finals consisted of four rounds, with each round consisting of four questions. |
Impact Factor: The quiz competition gave a platform to the students as well as the teachers to frame the questions, give suitable options, and monitor the buzzer while the participants had to manage the time effectively. Students acquired planning and managerial skills. Portrait and poster presentation witnessed lesser participation as many colleges had some college event on the day. But overall, both events were well managed by the students.

Social Sciences Association organized the activities with the following objectives:

The event under Utkarsha 2012 was named ?SSASIE? (SOCIAL SCIENCES ASSOCIATION SOUTH INDIAN EDUCATION ) : THE YOUTH BEATS |
There were 19 registered groups. Each group had 6 students, a total of 114 students all together. All the groups were to compulsorily participate in three Competitions namely, ? Youth Play? (skit competition), ?Serenata? (Group song competition) and ?BFABB? (Group Dance Competition). Every group event had to be based upon any social theme. |
Following were the themes and names of the groups
- LALKAR - Honour? Killing
- MOKSH - Corruption.
- HOPE ? AIDS
- The Siekh of India- Illiteracy
- The Baby On the Earth - Female Infanticide

All the groups participated in the program enthusiastically and whole heartedly. It was a pleasant surprise and a proud moment for all of us when visually challenged students from 11th standard not only participated but bagged some prize too. |

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS |
The Statistics Association hosted two fun filled events during Utkarsha-2012. |
QUIZATHON:? This was a Quiz on ?Olympics 2012?. An intra collegiate event, it witnessed an enthusiastic participation of 72 students across all departments in the college. The first round of elimination ?Minute 2 Minute? was through a set of fun filled games- managed entirely by the T.Y.BSc Statistics students. Thirteen teams who qualified had to go through a second set of elimination-?Quiz on Basic Statistics?. Five best teams out of thirteen entered the finals- which was a Quiz on ?India and Olympics 2012?. The final event witnessed a student crowd of around 100. |
Impact Factor: The event provided an opportunity to the T.Y.BSc Statistics students to manage an entire event from start to finish on their own. They displayed a very high sense of team work and organizational skills. Their creativity skills came to the forefront. |
Point 2 Point: This was an inter collegiate team event. Every team had to make a presentation on any one of the following topics: |
- Recent Movements against corruption in India
- Atrocities against Women in India
- India and Olympics 2012

There were 8 teams for this event. The participants displayed their communication, language, numerical and computer skills. |
Impact Factor: The event provided a platform to students from varying streams/faculty to come together and work as one team. It helped them to hone their communication, numerical and presentational skills and above all build team spirit. |

Under the umbrella of Utkarsha-2012,Department of Zoology organized the following events. |
Caza terosa- a tryst with destiny:
An?adventurous?event which included various tasks to be completed. |
Mystery quest:
Participants had to solve a murder mystery. The event comprised of screening of videos which ultimately lead to the murder. Hints were obtained from the videos and final murder mystery was solved. |
Anipix: Nature club as every year had organised a nature photography competition |
Impact Factor: The events helped students to hone their photographic skills, with an added advantage of understanding and loving nature and also their investigating skills.
