In general? most of us look at the issue of ?Harassment of Women? as mainly concerned with giving punishments and convicting the accused to life time imprisonment etc, while, this event portrayed the problem in a different light. The team of activists from ?Majlis Law? who deal with gender rights and issues on an everyday basis focused on creating awareness and also to broaden our knowledge of ?the areas of self defense by women, the way in which women can help themselves if such? situations occurs.
Various competitions such as? Poster Making, Speech, skits, Songs were conducted through? which? the students put forth their perceptions towards the problem of women?s Safety. The competitions got an overwhelming response by way of student participation.
An important aspect was that every presentation and performance was discussed, reviewed? and received feedback regarding womens safety. There was also a good discussion about the notion of ?capital punishment? being the ultimate solution for rape.
Following this, the street plays were held in the quadrangle of the college, again raising the awareness for safety of women. The NSS Unit of Maharashi Dayanand college, NSS Unit of S.I.E.S College and the DLLE students of S.I.E.S College did a great job in performing plays. Mixed with humor they displayed a message of total vigilance that?should be inculcated by women for their own safety.
This event also helped in clearing the misconceptions of a few, that rapes and other such abuse towards women are provoked by the women themselves.
At the end of the program students, both boys and girls left with a broader perspective regarding Empowerment and safety of women.
