DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY : INDUSTRIAL VISITS
An industrial visit to Silvassa was organized by the Chemistry Department for the undergraduate and post graduate students of Chemistry from 26th August 2013 to 28th August 2013. A team of four teaching staff Prof. Major Shabbir Bohra, Vice Princ. K. George Abraham, Prof. K. Balakrishnan and Prof. Mahalaxmi Nadar and non teaching staff Ms. Shital Raul along with 86 students left the college at 7.00am on 26th August 2013.
The first visit was to ?Siyaram Silk Mills. Ltd?. The company?s vision & mission statement was explained by the commercial head. The students were explained in detail about the raw materials godown, preparation of fabrics, warping & wefting, sulzer weaving and how the different fabrics were prepared at different rpm efficiency calculations, sizing department, robotic machines, drawing section where autodrawing was shown, manual drawing, picanol section, and quality inspection.
On 27th August 2013 the second visit was to Gravity India Limited which was mainly dedicated to curtain fabrics. This weaving was different from that at Siyaram Silks.
On 28th August 2013 the visit was to Alok industries Ltd. mainly dealing with polyester yarn. Here students were shown parallelized warping which is a pre process for weaving, waste recovery plant, polyester recover plant, picanol, jakard loom section where 5 lakh metres fabric is produced per day.
The last visit was to Parle Industry where the students were shown the complete working of Parle company and food products and had seen the biggest oven in India. There the students were shown the process of making Parle biscuit starting from the initial process of kneading, molding, baking and packing.
The visit was well received by all the students and the visit opened new opportunity for a career in Chemistry.

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICS : FIELD VISITS
An Educational Visit was organized for the students of SYBA to Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Ajmer in Rajasthan between the 12th and 18th of February, 2014. Forty one students along with 2 faculty members travelled almost across the width of Rajasthan in order to study and explore the economic , social , cultural and political compositions existing in these areas. The interactions and quality time spent in the villages and country side provided an understanding of some aspects of? the economic life as seen to a fair extent in the caste based occupational organization of society ,the kinds of farming practices, the beliefs of people and the nature of small scale industry there.? An interesting inclusion was therefore a visit to some small scale units such as ?Hand-Block? Printing and ?Pottery Making? specific to this region. The visit to the ?Jaisalmer Desert Festival?? was a refreshing ,energizing and memorable treat of the authentic cultural facet of Rajasthan which the students witnessed through the folk dances and songs performed by the Mangniar community of Jaisalmer.? The tour of?? the ?Mehrangarh Fort?, the ?Umaid Bhavan Palace? and the ?Jaswant Thada? in Jodhpur was like bringing? live? the lessons of the history classes. A visit to the Ajmer Dargah where the entire group offered a ?Chadder? on the Holy shrine was our ?Thanks Giving? and also showing the fact that it is? collective action and togetherness? that made this trip a unique one.??

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY : FIELD VISITS
The Department of History organised a study tour for the T.Y.B.A ?students, to the Capital Fort Raigad on 18th and 19th of September. The visit extremely motivated the students to study the important Fort of the Maratha Swaraj and the capital of Chatrapati Shivaji. It also created an interest to ?explore the archaeological study of the Fort.

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY : MICROBIOLOGY OLYMPIAD AT SHIRPUR
The final round of the 13th Annual State level Microbiology Olympiad was conducted on Monday 27th January 2014 by R. C. Patel College, Shirpur, Dist ?Dhule.
On Thursday 16th January, a preliminary written contest, consisting of multiple choice questions, was held at 57 colleges spread over Maharashtra. The contest was open to all undergraduate students of Microbiology. The questions had been carefully selected to cover the syllabi of F.Y.B.Sc, S.Y.B.Sc, and T.Y.B.Sc, with separate papers for each year. R.C.Patel College has been conducting this Olympiad for over a decade, but this year, students from Mumbai participated for the first time. From SIES Sion (W), 20 S.Y.B.Sc students and 15 T.Y.B.Sc students took the written test.
The top three rank holders for each year from the top 10 colleges were invited to R.C. Patel College, for the final oral round, which was held on 27th Jan 2014. SIES Sion (W) qualified for the finals. Two teams of three students each from S.Y.B.Sc and T.Y.B.Sc respectively, along with two staff members of the Microbiology Department, set out for Shirpur on 26th January 2014.
Shirpur is roughly 400 km away from Mumbai. The travelling expenses were very kindly sponsored by SIES Management. Expenses on account of boarding and lodging for the duration of the stay at Shirpur were borne by the host college.
The finals, held separately for teams of F.Y. S.Y. and T.Y.B.Sc consisted of four rounds of oral questioning. Contestants were judged on the basis of their team?s responses. Subject knowledge and reasoning abilities were tested. Mumbai colleges that were present at Shirpur were, Willson College, Patkar College, VES College and SIES.
We are very proud and happy to announce that our S.Y.B.Sc students secured third place. They were awarded a trophy certificates and medals and a cash prize of Rs 500/- Our students benefited greatly by participating in this Olympiad, and we hope that in the years to come there will be many more laurels to win. ????

PHYSICAL SOCIETY:?Sky Observation Trip?
Physical Society organized an overnight star-observation trip to Vangani on the ??4th of January 2014 and over 60 students made the trip to Vangani to see the night sky over Mumbai inspite of the cold weather conditions. The Sky-Observation programme at Vangani was arranged by the Khagol Mandal.
The Sky observation programme included two sky observation lectures where students were introduced to the sky, the objects to be viewed, practices and conventions to be followed during a night sky observation. Along with the two lectures, there were two telescope sessions where students got to see the objects discussed during the lectures through an astronomical telescope. There was a slide show on ?Makar Sankranti?, a Question &Answer session where questions related to Astronomy and Astrophysics were answered. All in all it was a really educational trip that was enjoyed by the students.
