A field trip was organized for the TYBSc students to United Breweries, Taloja on 05.01.2013. The students were able to observe and learn the manufacture of beer right from the processing of raw material to the packaging process. DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY : INDUSTRIAL VISIT
Students from the IT and Computer Science branches of M.Sc. and B.Sc. IT of the college went on an Industrial Visit to Chandigarh and Shimla from 29-Aug-12 to 4-Sep-12. The main purpose of this Industrial Visit was to learn more about the Information Technology Industry from Centre for Development for Advance Computing or C-DAC.
We visited C-DAC on 31-Aug after a short trip to the Rock Garden in Chandigarh. The Students attended a seminar on the history and operations of the company. C-DAC specializes in Electronics and Information technology. The company also offers advanced computer training to students and professionals. We toured the facilities of the company.
The first laboratory gave us helpful information about the Linux Operating System. The company has created its own distribution of Linux called Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS). An education oriented version of the distribution called EduBOSS has been deployed to many government schools across North India, which has resulted in significant cost savings for the schools.
C-DAC also elaborated on various features to make the operating system user friendly, including those that are not present in the Windows Operating System. Some of them include adding support for native Indian languages, to make it easier to use for Indian audiences.
Next, we were introduced to the Bioinformatics lab, where we were shown medical appliances and embedded systems designed and deployed by the company. Cyber security was the third lab we visited. Here we learned about how complex systems are built so that they can detect and prevent data theft and security breaches.
The visit was highly beneficial to us and we now have a much clearer idea of how to approach our projects. We also learned more about the professional environment that we will enter in the near future.
Once we completed our visit of C-DAC, we headed towards Shimla, which was the last leg of our tour. We enjoyed the local sights and shopping for two days. An excursion to Kufri was the highlight of the trip. Overall, we had a very enjoyable and educative experience.
