DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY : Industrial visit to Serum Institute, Pune
The post graduate students from the Biotechnology department of S.I.E.S college of Arts, Science and Commerce visited the Serum Institute of India, Pune for an industrial visit as a part of their academic syllabi.
Serum Institute of India was founded in 1966 with the aim of manufacturing life-saving immuno-biologicals, which were in shortage in the country and imported at high prices. Thereafter, several life-saving biologicals were manufactured at prices affordable to the common man and in abundance, with the result that the country was made self-sufficient for Tetanus Anti-toxin and Anti-snake Venom serum, followed by DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis) group of Vaccines and then later on MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) group of vaccines. The recent ventures of this institute include development of ?Gold standard? HDC Rabies vaccine and the H1N1 vaccines. The students were explained the various steps involved in vaccine production such as culturing of viruses in human diploid cell lines (HDC), inactivation of virus, its packing and many other processing steps.
The students were later given a tour of the Vaccine production unit of the institute. Here the students were able to observe the actual functioning of a vaccine production unit. The tour ended with a visit to the instrumentation lab where modern analytical techniques were performed. Thus the visit was an overall enlightenment for the students about the new advancements in vaccine production and was thoroughly educational. The students were highly gratified for getting an opportunity to visit an institute of such high stature.
