NATIONAL SPORTS DAY CELEBRATION
National Sports Day is celebrated in the country on the 29th day of August every year. Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29th August 1905. Known as hockey?s magician, Major Dhyan Chand contributed immensely to Indian hockey in Olympics and as a mark of respect to the great legend, his birth anniversary is celebrated as National Sports Day.
We at SIES? College of Arts, Science and Commerce celebrated National Sports Day by conducting Tug-of-war competition for the college students.
Since 29th August 2013 was a holiday, SIES conducted Tug-of-War competition on 30th August 2013.
The competition was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Harsha Mehta by lighting the traditional lamp and was witnessed by a large number of students, teaching staff and non teaching staff. Vice Principals too witnessed the event.
This year 32 teams participated. The participants were from both Degree as well as Junior college. For the competition, special rules were laid down. Each team consisted of 7 participants with a combination of 4 boys and 3 girls.
Several rounds were conducted and winners were declared. At the end of the programme First, Second and Third Prizes were given to the top three teams. The team lead by Mr. Nitin Naidu won the gold medal.
The event was a grand success as the rain God was kind enough and did not pour any rain till the end of the event. All the members of Gymkhana committee helped in the smooth conduct of the event.

The Annual Athletic meet
(Sports Day)
The annual athletic meet of our college was held on 25th January 2014. The sports day was conducted at the K J Somaiya College Ground. The meet started at 8 am and finished at 5 pm. The enthusiastic staff members were present before the scheduled time ?to take charge of their duties.

?Mr. Ramamoorthy graced? the? occasion.?

A large number of students participated in the meet. Heats and Semifinals were conducted for? many events.
Three medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze ) were given to the winners of each event.? Certificates were given to all winners. All the student ?participants were given refreshment coupons. According to the points scored , following students were awarded champion- trophies:

Running race for teaching and non teaching staff were conducted and applauded with loud cheers from the students.
The Gymkhana Committee and the Gymkhana Chairman take this opportunity to thank our Principal Dr. Harsha Mehta, Vice Principals , teaching and non teaching? staff for the smooth conduct of the program.

INTER COLLEGIATE CHESS TOURNAMENT
?FOR VISUALLY CHALLENGED STUDENTS
HELD ON 24TH FEBRUARY 2014
Our college organized the Intercollegiate Chess tournament for visually challenged students on 24th February 2014. There were total 16 entries from various city colleges and from the departments of Mumbai University.
Our Principal Dr. Harsha Mehta presided over the inaugural function.
Mr. M. Ramamoorthy, Member SIES Managing Council, inaugurated the event at 10.00 am.?
Four rounds of 30 minutes each was provided for each participant. The points scored were recorded and based on the points scored; three prizes with certificates were awarded. ?All other participants were awarded consolation prize and certificate
Our student volunteers, teachers and nonteaching staff took great care to see that the event was conducted smoothly.
The college provided lunch and high tea to all the participants. The participants expressed happiness for the hospitality shown towards them and also the arrangement made for them.
The event was conducted with the help of AKHIL MAHARASHTRA CHESS ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND.
The event was successfully completed at 4.30 pm.
