Report on the workshop ?Expression, Purification and structural analysis of proteins? organized by the Department of Biotechnology on 27th, 28th and 29th February 2012
|
A Workshop on ?Expression, Purification and structural analysis of proteins? was organized by the Department of Biotechnology between 27th February and 29th February 2012.The field of Science and Technology has shown great progress in the last decade. A number of sophisticated techniques have been introduced and put into in research labs and industries. These techniques are now being taught in syllabi of colleges across the country. However several of the teachers have not had the opportunity to get a firsthand experience of these methods and techniques or even to learn them from scientists in research institutes. Hence they are unable to pass on this knowledge to the students effectively. The workshop was a venture to introduce some such techniques involved in the expression, purification and structural analysis of proteins to teachers who in turn could introduce these to the students with greater clarity.? The program was facilitated by Dr Surekha Zingde, Deputy Director, ACTREC and entirely supported by Lady Tata Memorial Trust. Seventeen teachers from different colleges in Mumbai registered for the workshop. The teachers were selected on the basis of a Statement of purpose which impressed upon their need for such training. The three day workshop was divided into six sessions of lectures and practicals . Each lecture was followed by practical related to the topic covered in the lecture. The key note address was delivered by Dr Lakshmi Rao, General Manager, Biotech Research, US Vitamins Ltd. The resource persons included Dr Ashok Varma, Dr Rukmini Govekar, Dr R.Kalraiya, Dr Tanuja Teni and Dr V.Prasanna from ACTREC, Navi Mumbai and Dr Savita Kulkarni and Dr Archana Damle from RMC,BARC. Technical support during sessions were rendered by M/s Technosource( Ms Yogita Birje) and M/S Merck specialities? (Mr Rahul Joshi). Photography as a career option is not known as much as the others are. There are many questions regarding the same. Of course today due to the increasing need of good photographers many creative people are getting to explore this creative side of theirs and later convert it into their profession. |
To enlighten us on the same, a proficient and skilled photographer, Mr. Saumik Kar who works as the Chief Photographer with Outlook visited our college. Simple looking just equipped with a camera, we were amazed at the immense knowledge that he holds about photography. He started with the explanation of few basic concepts that we needed to understand from the industry point of view and then began explaining about photojournalism. He told us stories of other photographers and his own experiences which gave us an insight into the field and cleared many assumptions that that we had regarding the field. |
As the session drew to its completion he encouraged the students to ask him questions and answered the qualms and that too concentrating on the minute details and then proceeding further. |
