Social Awareness/Community Services - (2007 - 2008)

Besides intellectual development we try our best to provide the students with proper resources to make them productive and responsible citizens. Inculcating into them leadership qualities is another objective behind exposing the students to various events and community services.
Health and Sanitation have been the key areas addressed by us this year. We have tried to create awareness in the weaker sections of the society regarding hygiene and sanitation.

  • ?Haath Mein Sehat? - an ongoing project was undertaken by the Microbiology Dept. assisted by the Economics Dept. along with an NGO ?Engineers for a sustainable world ? Berkeley? run by the University of California. The project aimed at educating the slum dwellers from Behrampada a big slum in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai about the importance of good and hygienic drinking water.
  • Ban the Bulb rally ? In association with Green Peace the VISIONS team organised rally against Global warming on 12th December 2007. The agenda of this rally was to ban the Yellow bulb which emitted Carbon Dioxide harmful to the society and replaced with compact fluorescent lamps.

  • Animal lovers took a rally in association with the NGO PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) from SIES College to Five Gardens in Matunga.

  • Alert India organised Leprosy awareness workshop for Junior College students.
  • NAB (National Association for Blind) presented a film making students aware of their responsibility towards visually impaired students. Students made good contribution for the cause.
  • The contribution of the NSS Unit to the community this year is really notable. It conducted 2 blood donation drives and collected 242 units of blood
  • NSS Unit conducted two Thalassaemia detection and awareness drive.
  • As part of the Green Mumbai, Clean Mumbai the NSS Volunteers planted trees at Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi and at Shivbhakta Adivasi Ashram Shala, Lavili.

  • NSS students distributed Anti-Fileria tablets in various backward areas.
  • Botany Students with the support of BMC conducted Zero Garbage drive and? conducted the survey of Flora and fauna in and around Sion ? Matunga area.
  • As part of the SEC community BMM students and other volunteers have aided Aakansha with Rs 10,000 cash money.
  • Gender sensitization has always been on our priority list. Our efforts have been continued in this direction and have tie-ups with NGO like Akshara, Katha and in Collaboration we have screened several films based on Women issues.
  • 11 Students of SIES College played an exemplary role with their presence of mind, resulting in the arrest of three women illegally selling tiger claws in the city.
