Report on the SIES Alumni-Reunion 2013-14
The SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion West, Mumbai, saw a grand musical extravaganza and dinner organized by the SIES Past Students? Association on 22nd February ?2014 in the college premises.
The event had a grand turnout of around 400 past students, ranging from the first batch of 1960 to the last batch of 2012. It was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. Harsha Mehta, who heartily welcomed all the ex-students to the college. Mr. Ramamoorthy, the chairman of the PSA too expressed his pleasure at meeting many of his acquaintances.?The idea behind arranging such a get together?was to give our alumni a platform to meet their old batch mates and also to explore the possibility of involving them in the future activities of the institution.
The President of the association Mr. M. Ramamoorthy said the association had in the past helped the college to set up a Microbiology laboratory??as well as a Library for the visually handicapped students of the college besides setting??up several merit scholarships and also freeships for??the economically weaker students. The Principal of the college Dr. Harsha Mehta?appealed to the SIES PSA and alumni to help in setting up a modern class room with gadgets such as over head projectors which will help improve the standard of the institution. There was also an initiative to start an institution-industry interface towards adopting a village named Kawthewadi, Karjat, Dist. Raigad where our alumni can be of immense assistance in an on-going project. This project is working towards the construction of a community hall, toilet blocks and equipping their school with teaching aids and modern technological amenities at Kawthewadi.?
All the ex-students were thrilled to reconnect with their teachers, colleagues, and batch mates. Ms. Vishalakshi, who has returned to the college for the first time after graduating in BCom in 1987 said: 'The College hasn't changed much in since I graduated, and I like it this way.? A similar sentiment was echoed by Mr. Subramaniam (BCom 1984): 'I am returning to the college after 30 years, and yet it looks familiar. I feel very nostalgic, especially for my favourite hangout spot, which was outside the Reading Hall.'
As the evening progressed, guests and staff alike were swaying to the beats of Mahendra Shah and group. The sumptuous dinner arranged by Mutthuswamy [Arya Bhavan, Matunga fame] was praised by all. The event received commercial sponsorship from reputed banks such as Saraswat Bank, along with well-known companies such as Excel Industries, DHFL Housing, Hem Corporation, Maruti Biltech to name some as well as individual sponsorship by a few ex-students of the college such as Mr. Ashok Thanawala, Mr. Ashok Shah, Mr. Kirit Mehta and Mr. Vinod Vyas to name some, who were all alumni of the 1972 batch.?
The Alumni-Reunion served as a trip down memory lane for many ex-students and teachers, who reminisced over the good old days. It was a grand event which was successful in re-establishing the lost connection between the students and the college.?
