There were in all 57 participants who were SIES students from T.Y.B.Sc., S.Y.B.Sc. and M.Sc. class. After the inauguration which began with an invocation song and lighting of the lamp, Principal Dr. Harsha K. Mehta gave her welcome address. The resource persons Dr. Ajit Datar, Dr. G. Chintalwar and Mr. Saikat Mallick were welcomed and felicitated with mementos and a Tulsi plant each. Dr. G. Ramakrishnan, Adjunct Professor SIES College and President of the Chromatographic Society of India introduced the resource persons and gave his observations. Mrs. Jayanthi Ramamurthy, Head ? Department of Chemistry and Convenor of the workshop gave the details of the workshop. The programme was compered by Mrs. Rathi Ramachandran. |
Details of sessions on Friday, 27th July, 2012. |
Session I? : 9 am to 1 pm (Pre-lunch) and Session II : 2 pm to 5 pm (Post-lunch) |
Dr. Ajit Datar, Consultant Shimadzu Corporation in a very lucid manner discussed the Principles and Classification of Chromatography. Mr. Saikat Mallick, Application Specialist, ANCHROM Pvt. Ltd. gave talk and also demonstrated experiments on TLC, HPTLC and explained the Instrumentation and Applications using a power point presentation. |
In the afternoon session, practicals were performed by the students guided by Dr. G. Ramakrishnan, Dr. G. Chintalwar assisted by the teaching staff of SIES College which included thin layer chromatography (TLC), Radial Paper chromatography, Ascending and Descending Paper chromatography. Demonstration experiments included pre-prepared chromatographic separation of amino acids by radial paper chromatography, technique of preparative TLC, Ascending and Descending Paper chromatography. |
Details of sessions on Saturday, 28th July, 2012. |
Session I? : 9 am to 1 pm (Pre-lunch) Session II : 2 pm to 5 pm (Post-lunch) |
Dr. Ajit Datar gave a series of lectures on Gas chromatography, Liquid chromatography and High Pressure Liquid chromatography. The session was interactive with many questions from students. There was also a surprise quiz and 3 top scorers were given prizes in the valedictory function. |
In the afternoon Dr. G. Ramakrishnan and Dr. G. Chintalwar demonstrated and explained the experiment of column chromatography. They explained column preparation and the criteria for the same and also demonstrated the separation of curcumin on a SiO2 column. The M. Sc. Biochemistry students explained and showed the separation of the plant pigment chlorophyll on the column. Mrs. Jayanthi R explained the use of the distillation apparatus for reuse of solvent used as eluants and also explained the criteria for choice of solvent for elution. The students were taken to the laboratory and they separated fluorenone from fluorine by column chromatography and were assisted by the teaching staff of the SIES College. |
The HPLC and GC instruments were provided to us by the Thermo Fisher Scientific Ltd and Mr. Harish Barve, their Service Executive, explained the instrumentation and working of the same to the students in batches assisted by Dr. G. Ramakrishnan. |
The workshop ended with the valedictory function where the certificates were distributed to the participants. Mr. Shabbir H. Bohra proposed vote of thanks. The workshop was very satisfactory in all and was well received. All students enjoyed the tea and refreshments provided before the valedictory function. |

Report on ?Radioactivity and Applications of Radioisotopes? held on ?3rd & 4th August, 2012.
|
The Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Indian Association of Nuclear Chemist and Allied Scientists (IANCAS), BARC conducted a two day DAE-BRNS IANCAS Workshop on ?Radioactivity and Applications of Radioisotopes? on Friday 3rd August and Saturday 4th August, 2012. There were in all 160 participants from T.Y.B.Sc., S.Y.B.Sc. F.Y.B.Sc. and M.Sc. class. |
The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. AVR Reddy, Head, Analytical Chemistry Division, BARC and Vice-President IANCAS. All dignitaries were felicitated with mementos, a Tulsi plant and Shri. AVR Reddy was honoured with a shawl and memento. Dr. AVR Reddy gave the key note address and introduced the concepts of Radioactivity and its application. He brought out clearly that it is the cleanest method of power generation and is very suitable for our country. He held the audience spell bound with his very simple and illustrative talk, explained to the students the method of gaining entry into BARC and illustrated the activities of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in India particularly the use of radioactive isotopes for the welfare of the society. This was followed by an outstanding presentation on interaction of radiation with matter and radiation detectors by Dr. T. P. Chaturvedi. He explained the basic mechanism of interaction of gamma-ray radiation as well as charged particles with matter and how this is used as a detector. This was followed by an exciting talk by Dr. R. Acharya also the workshop coordinator on the methods of production of radioisotopes using nuclear reactors and charge particle accelerators. |
The best part of the workshop was the actual experiments performed using Alpha ray monitor, G. M. Counter and NaI(Tl) scintillation detector by Dr. Veena B. Sagar, Dr. U.? M. Kasar, Dr. R. B. Manolkar, Dr. A. Sarkar and Shri S. Salunkhe. |
On the second day Dr. J. R. Bandekar began the workshop citing the applications of radioisotopes in food and agriculture and Dr. N. Shivaprasad (BRIT DAE) gave a talk on application of radioisotopes in industry and healthcare both of which were very informative and useful. There was a quiz competition for the students, at the end of the session-II Dr. R. Acharya was the Quiz master. The students were divided in to four teams and participated enthusiastically in this quiz. Cash prizes were given to all the teams in order of merit. |
Dr. B. S. Tomar, Head, RACD, BARC, was the chief guest for the valedictory function and also gave a detailed account of nuclear fission, its discovery and applications. This was followed by a feedback session by teachers, students and IANCAS team members. |
All in all it was a good learning experience for our students and we are extremely thankful to the IANCAS team for the entire tour they carried us through, from ABC of ?Radiochemistry and Radioactivity? to XYZ, namely applications in various fields including medicine and nuclear energy. All the students and staff who participated in the workshop were given refreshments at the end of the programme. |
